1. Purpose

This policy defines the terms of use, access control, and acceptable usage of the EduRoam (education roaming) service provided by NCSR Demokritos. The purpose is to ensure secure, reliable, and compliant access to wireless network resources by visiting users and institutional affiliates.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Internal users: NCSR Demokritos staff, researchers, students, and authorized guests.
  • External users: eduroam-affiliated users from other institutions accessing the NCSR Demokritos wireless infrastructure.

3. General Conditions

  • Eduroam access is federated. NCSR Demokritos provides visitor network access under the eduroam service, and delegates authentication to the home institution of the visiting user.
  • Users must abide by both the NCSR Demokritos Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and their home institution’s AUP.
  • All access is subject to monitoring and logging in accordance with the NCSR Demokritos security and privacy policies, as well as GDPR compliance.

4. User Responsibilities

Users must:

  • Use eduroam only for academic, research, and administrative purposes.
  • Not attempt to interfere with, degrade, or bypass network security mechanisms.
  • Ensure their devices are kept secure, patched, and free from malware.
  • Refrain from any activity that could be considered abusive, illegal, or harmful to the network or other users.

5. Authentication & Device Configuration

  • eduroam access requires 802.1X authentication with WPA2/WPA3-Enterprise encryption.
  • Users must configure their devices to authenticate using EAP methods such as EAP-TTLS, PEAP, or EAP-TLS, depending on home institution requirements.
  • Configuration assistance for NCSR Demokritos users is available via the eduroam CAT (Configuration Assistant Tool).

6. Logging and Privacy

  • Connection logs, including MAC address, user ID (RADIUS attributes), and session metadata, are retained for security auditing and incident response.
  • Logs are kept for a period compliant with institutional data retention policies and applicable law (e.g., GDPR).
  • No content-level data (e.g., browsing activity) is inspected or stored.

7. Enforcement and Sanctions

  • Any misuse of the eduroam service may result in suspension of access, reporting to the home institution, and/or disciplinary/legal action as applicable.
  • NCSR Demokritos reserves the right to block devices or users that pose a threat to the network.
